One Dress, Four Ways

I absolutely loved working on this project for New York Magazine's current Weddings issue. Four stylists were given this simple wedding gown to style in any creative way. I love the juxtaposition of high/low, simple/outlandish, leather and lace. My look is the biker chick (chic). Click on the image to see the details better. I paired our wonderful feather collar by Dana Michele with a leather tuxedo jacket -- it has tails!! Giant crystal stud Balenciaga earrings balance off the glam Untamed Petals sash. Gabriella New York helped us out with the shoes -- altogether a cool look, no?

One amazing part of the experience was working with the hair, makeup and model. As you can see, she is completely transformed in each look. The stylists whipped the model into shape in minutes and really captured the vibe I was looking for. Makes me think every bride should try out a bunch of looks for their big day...

So, I might have gotten my bug and butterfly obsession out of my system now that it's fall. Plus, I have a new idea I can't get out of my head -- nuts. Well, nuts and seeds. I am finding acorns all over my property and I am remembering the little acorn creatures I made as a child. While brainstorming for a winter wedding, I came up with the idea of nuts and a custom nutcracker as an in-room gift. I would love that!

When I ran across these chocolate nut favors, I went (forgive me) nuts. You can find them and the little bags on etsy. Or you can get a rubber stamp and print your own muslin bags. Then you can customize the bag with your monogram, wedding date, or a cute image of a squirrel...

Butterfly Cake

As a wedding planner, I have been seriously influenced by "everything Martha" for well over a decade. This holds true for many of my clients, too, who come to me clutching tear sheets from the magazine. Sometimes all they have to say is "do you remember that cover with the butterflies" and I know exactly what they're referring to. I see a lot of real weddings clearly modeled on images and ideas from the magazine, with varying degrees of success. An upcoming wedding client wants the butterfly cake shown on the cover here which I promised to deliver. When I saw Wedding Star where you can purchase butterfly kits that capture the spirit of the cover cake, I was delighted to find an easy resource to "get the look". What do you think?

Last week I had the double pleasure of enjoying the perfect pairing of champagne and chocolate at my favorite sweets store, La Maison du Chocolat. And at this event, the North American CEO of Christofle, Nicolas Krafft, demonstrated the technique of beheading a bottle of champagne with a gleaming saber.

A few years ago I planned a wedding with a dramatic sabrage demonstration. It's one of the most glamorous wedding moments I've witnessed. What a way to start off your welcome toast. And you can learn it on-line if you're brave enough to do it yourself!

Group Photo Idea

Having a photographic record of everyone who attended your wedding is wonderful, but even the most diligent photographer may not catch an image of every single guest. And of those pictures, not many are likely to end up in your final album (some candids are just not meant to be showcased!).

When my clients are game, I love to capture a group pic, such as the one below (the guests flew in from all over the world!). The resulting photo is the perfect shot with which to end your wedding album, and it can also be converted into a beautiful thank-you note. How do we do it? The photographer and I gather everyone together right after the ceremony when all attendees are already in one spot.

How do you plan on remembering everyone who came to your wedding? (For mine, I kept everyone's RSVP cards and the sweet notes that were included.)

Sotheby's Important Jewels

Yesterday I had the distinct privilege of a private tour of the Sotheby's Important Jewels sale by Lisa Hubbard, Chairman of Jewellery for Sotheby's. Wow. What an experience. Over 500 jewels, each with the history of a prior owner. Turn of the century hair sticks, contemporary bangles and diamonds, diamonds, diamonds.
This is an amazing insider place to find that perfect dangle earring for your wedding, or a gorgeous engagement ring. Lisa shared with me that most jewelry sells at auction for about a third to a fifth of retail store value. Diamond prices are more normalized, but I think it's still really romantic to raise a paddle for a coveted bauble.

What's more, the consultants encourage you to try on, to browse, to ask questions and indulge. I tried on everything in sight -- a girl can dream!

My biggest "take away"? Some of these treasures are downright affordable. See for yourself at Sothebys. But the items I tried on, including the catalogue cover piece are quite "one of a kind".

Platinum and diamond tassle earrings. I can picture these with a certain Vera Wang bridal gown...

Destination Surf's Up!

We love seeing guests using their personalized totes, wearing their bespoke baseball caps, and sipping from their bottled water printed with custom labels during destination wedding weekends. These little elements help friends and family feel (and look) like part of "the wedding crowd."

Paper Garlands

I am crazy for a sweet paper garland. Small and delicate, they nonetheless pack a design punch when used as a backdrop or table decoration. So I was delighted to see the garland how-to on the Bride's Guide.

I've never made them myself but use the pretty ones offered by Kate Greiner on etsy. I love her rainbow color choices and her options of different shapes, sizes and even customization.

Here I've used them for a ceremony "frame" with tissue paper pom poms, and even as cake decor.

Fresh Juice Bar

I recently held a party hosted by a favorite NYC restaurant, Rouge Tomate. I seek inspiration from my favorite restaurants and this Michelan-rated Modern-American restaurant based on locally grown, organic foods provides plenty of ideas. I am particularly fond of their fresh juices made with unusual combinations -- they are in equal parts pretty, delicious and even nutritious! So when a planning client was seeking a healthy start to their wedding dinner, I knew just the thing -- a fresh juice bar. The bar works perfectly with or without alcohol; the key is the unique and distinctive combinations -- dill and cucumber; green tea, agave syrup and mint; or try this recipe courtesy of Rouge Tomate.

The Passion Mate

4 oz. Yerba Mate (a South American plant)

1 1/2 oz. Passion fruit juice

1/2 oz. Lemon Juice

Agave syrup to taste

Directions: First, cold infuse the Mate tea the day before (or half day). Then, in a shaker combine the Yerba Mate, Passion Fruit Juice, Lemon Juice and Agave. Shake with ice. After, pour into a highball and add some fresh Blueberries or Huckleberries as a garnish. Spike option: This drink goes well with tequila. (If you're feeling extra adventuous try a habanero infused tequila for an extra kick)!

Long, Long, Long-Lasting Lipstick

No matter how good a makeup artist is I've always been bothered by the dilemma of the disappearing lipstick. With all the talking and smooching a bride does on her wedding day lipstick touch-ups are a constant concern. So when a professional make-up artist clued me into a drugstore lipstick that did the trick, I ran to my local pharmacy to try it out. Revlon's Ultimate ColorStay Liquid Lipstick was on my lips the same day. It went on like a wand gloss, which was great. A minute later my lips felt like I applied a glue stick to them. When the lipstick dried (about 3 minutes), the stickiness was gone and the lipstick was on solid. I ate, I drank, I kissed; it did not come off. I admit to a drying sensation to this matte color but although the lipstick did not last 24 hours successfully, it certainly lasted the length of even a very long wedding. This is a lipstick I would trust to stay on and look good all night long. Try Perfect Peony with a clear gloss over it for a perfect wedding color. Give it a test run and let me know what you think!

Personalized Prints

We are often asked to suggest an alternative to the traditional guest book and I love this example from Personalized Prints on etsy. Each leaf is a signing spot for guests and the trees come with different numbers of leaves for small or big weddings. The turnaround is quick and as you can see, it's pretty enough to simply hang on your wall (as I did for the Wedding Library poster I commissioned). You have the option to print it yourself, too, and for different quality printing. Fun, decorative and novel. I love this guest book idea!

Henna Cakes

Sandy Patangay traditionally applies henna tattoos to Indian wedding parties and guests of parties of all kinds. But she's recently branched out with an extraordinary new company Creme-Delicious. She re-creates her intricate henna designs on perfectly delicious little heart cakes. This is how it's done. First her baker creates the chocolate, vanilla or red velvet creations covered in white fondant. Sandy colors each cake to achieve the vibrant Indian hues she seeks. The cakes are cream-infused with white chocolate, strawberry or chocolate hazelnut. Then she painstakingly decorates each cake with piping, sugar dusting powder and sugar beads. The individual serving cakes can take up to a half-hour to decorate and are as beautiful as they are delicious. I think they would make a wonderful wedding favor, or simply an exquisite wedding dessert. Very special.

Susan Schneider, three-time Executive Editor of Elegant Bride, Modern Bride and Bridal Guide, has come out with a novel of the likes of "The Devil Wears Prada" but for the bridal set. Yes, I read it in two sittings. I invited my editor pal over to the Wedding Library to dig the real dirt, but she swears it's all a work of fiction.

I say buy it immediately if you are getting married, intend to get married or ever were married. (Furthermore, if you're in the industry it's simply irresistible.) Perfect for the deck chair, with margarita in hand, poolside in East Hampton. Ahhh summer reading.....

Charming Seating Charts

I wrote about it on Martha Stewart's Bride's Guide today, and reiterate it here. Escort cards are tried and true, but seating charts can be useful, especially for a complicated floor plan. Laura Hooper has made them charming, too. These pretty maps can be customized to any theme and I think are particularly creative when you have table names instead of numbers. And they make a great keepsake remembrance of all the guests at your wedding.

A client of mine will be getting her cake from her venue, and she is concerned about the in-house artistry as she'd like her design to be similar to this cover of Martha Stewart Weddings. I promised to decorate the cake personally if the in-house baker couldn't do it, but then I stumbled upon Wedding Star. I was planning to search out butterflies in different sizes and hues (or call my friends and Martha Stewart to find out how it was done). But now we don't have to!

Getting a cake with your venue is a great perk -- but often my clients are worried that the execution may not be exactly as they pictured it if they could choose their own baker. My advice is to show the in-house baker lots of pictures of what you're looking for. Look at their work and make sure they are up to the task. If not, adapt your design to suit their style. If you don't like their sugar bows, use real ribbon. If their sugar flowers are not delicate enough -- use real ones. And if all else fails, go simple and classic.

Bridal Lounges and Libraries: Playing Matchmaker for Brides and Wedding Pro

Let these industry experts take the tough marketing stuff off your plate so you can focus on your craft and the brides who have already hired you.

In the ever-competitive wedding marketplace, a bumper crop of one-stop bridal “lounges” and “libraries” showcasing a select number of vendors and venues is making waves. The concept is to offer complimentary planning assistance to brides while matching them with venues and vendors who suit their overall vision and budget. The featured vendors and venues get great access to brides-to-be, giving them time to focus on what they do best while leaving the sales and marketing up to the experts.

The Wedding Library, situated in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, may be the longest-standing example of the concept, and similar business models have popped up in major cities across the country from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Boston.

Professionals, like Claudia Hanlin, who started the Wedding Library 11 years ago and is now a contributing editor to Martha Stewart Weddings, have their finger on the pulse of the industry and use their extensive, up-to-date knowledge to help brides and industry professionals simplify the booking process. How many brides are we talking about? Some of these operations work with up to 700 brides at the same time. That’s some serious buying power.

Most bridal libraries and lounges are membership based for venues and vendors, and they’re often exclusive. Members pay a monthly or yearly fee to have their portfolio added to the library and to be considered by the in-house coordinators. But what’s unique is that these wedding-industry matchmakers tend to look for the next great, up-and-coming wedding professional. “Brides don’t need me to connect them with that famous, high-profile vendor who everyone knows about; they just need me to find them a talented vendor who will meet their budget needs and mirror their vision,” says Hanlin. They’re also not just there to support the brides; it’s a true matchmaking process from start to finish, continues Hanlin: “We have a very intimate relationship with our members, and when we match a bride with a vendor, we can say with conviction that it’s a good fit.”

Head south from New York City to the Bride’s Lounge in New Orleans, and you’ll see a similar format with all of its own style and flair. Appointments are suggested, but walk-ins are welcome. Once there, brides receive complimentary consultations, full access to vendor portfolios, and beauty consultations from an on-site hair and makeup artists. But again, it’s not just about the bride; vendor and venue members are invited and encouraged to use the lounge space for parties, tastings, client meetings, and networking.

The Boston Bridal Lounge on Newbury Street offers a full library of wedding resources, local vendor portfolios, and an inspiration wall complete with trending color schemes. Brides can also browse seasonal tablescape displays by vendors like Winston Flowers and Rafinelli Events, while sipping champagne and discussing their upcoming weddings with experienced professionals.

The Bridal Bar, which has locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Atlanta, does all of the above while placing a focus on education so brides know all they need to know before the big day. They represent a group of vendors they believe to be the best in their area while also offering bridal shows, styling events, sample sales, and designer trunk shows.

In addition to offering their extensive “matchmaking” services and general wedding planning consultations, these locations also often operate as retailers. For example: The Wedding Library carries stationery suites and bridesmaid dresses. They are the flagship store for well-known names like Dessy and Thread, garnering foot traffic that only makes a membership with them all the more valuable.

But what if your wedding business is based far from a major city with no such trendy bridal lounge? Here at Hawthorn, we’ve seen wedding professionals take matters into their own hands by building a network within their area and setting up meetings to share ideas with other venues and vendors. Another option is a virtual one: Connect with other professionals through social media by tagging another vendor in one of your Facebook posts or alerting your Twitter followers by using the “follow Friday” hash tag (#FF) on Fridays to suggest that your fans follow other talented professionals. A time-intensive but effective third option is to come together to plan and design a photo shoot to showcase your collective creativity, then work with editorial outlets to make it all pay off in the form of magazine or online feature. Jubilee Events out of Connecticut did just that with partner vendors in a photo shoot we picked up for the last issue of GALA Weddings New England.

Our point in all of this: Collaboration is key and whether you can join a library or lounge network like those showcased above or generate something grassroots on your own, having a support system of like-minded professionals who know the industry can turn today’s brides-to-be into those you’re working with tomorrow.

Besides a celebrity wedding last weekend and our opening party on Monday I had the pleasure of attending the ISES (International Special Events Society) Awards Dinner for New York's Big Apple Awards this week. My friends Bentley Meeker and Jes Gordon were inducted as Legends and both proved that being incredibly cool and superbly professional and talented are not mutually exclusive. Congratulations!

I was also happy to be nominated for awards in three categories: Best Design Decor, Best Planner and Best Table Top Design.
I was delighted to win a crystal apple for Best Design for a project you can see in the upcoming WellWed magazine -- a sophisticated picnic in Tuxedo Park, New York.

I was thrilled when my friend Darcy Miller at Martha Stewart Weddings offered to host a "housewarming" party for my new salon and office in NYC. I also appreciated that it created a renovation deadline to get our place ship-shape for the over 200 industry guests who arrived to check out our new digs. Our wonderful new neighbors at Rouge Tomate were the most amazing hosts of our cocktail party with delicious hors d'oeuvres, specialty cocktails and sweets for the discerning crowd -- and wowed everyone with their chic concoctions.

I can't think of a better way to discover a new venue than by being invited to have dinner there with 30 friends. And it seems I just can't stay away from Williamsburg -- did you know that it's only 7 minutes from Manhattan (my GPS told me)? Anyway, the currently zen Josh Friedman of Elan Artists invited us to check out the Brooklyn Winery. Even though their own first wine press won't be ready for a few weeks, we delighted in the space, the music, the food, the atmosphere and the company. And I loved experiencing some new vendors whom I am delighted to share with you!

I couldn't have loved the floral designer Kathleen (Kat) Hyppolite more. I wanted to take her arrangements home but decided not to be one of those guests....

The mismatched and charming plates are from Props for Today, the favor was a bottle of delicious ginger syrup to make our own specialty cocktail at home. Sweet!

Our newest Wedding Librarian, Victoria Kasten, sips a specialty drink.

The details. The super-lovely waitresses were in theme, and that kind of discreet detail makes a party stand out. Perfect!

Allan Zepeda, who has shot many events for me and shoots for Mel & Co., captured the evening perfectly. He makes every event more festive just by being there.

Your Own Royal Wedding

The perfection of Kate and William's wedding will surely influence trends for years to come. But since most of us won't have thousands of guests and a national holiday declared for our wedding day, how do we interpret the perfect elegance of a royal wedding? Well first, get married at a castle. In Ireland. Last week I visited just such a magical place, fit for a princess.

Adare Manor, a 19th Century mansion, located just a half hour from Shannon Airport, is a quick 7 hours direct flight from NYC. And as you arrive, you're truly transported.

As you approach the manor, this is your view. The emerald green lawn is perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony.

The three-hundred year old cedar tree marks a great photo spot.

The lawn, ceremony-ready. In the background is the famed Adare Manor Golf Club, voted the number one Golf Resort in Ireland and the UK by Conde Nast Traveller. Not bad.

I was lucky enough to meet with all of Adare Manor's preferred vendors, from planners to floral designers -- and they are guaranteed to make your planning process easy and unique.

The Manor's walled gardens are a perfect setting for an outdoor wedding, ideal for a marquee.

Another view of the walled gardens, I picture a Sunday brunch with mimosas in hand, or a Friday barbecue complete with pig roast. There is so much to choose -- ranging from the Tavern for a late-night after-party to the Gallery fit for a king.

A weekend event has to include a little fly-fishing -- right outside the Manor the river is stocked with salmon and trout. A guide is on-hand with fishing poles and instructions.

The nearby Adare Village local church is lovingly restored, a mixture of vibrant painting and 700 year-old architecture. There are both Protestant and Catholic churches nearby, and the ruins of an abbey for a perfectly breathtaking backdrop a few hundred yards away off the property.
The nearby village of Adare boasts charming shops with thatch roofs, cozy pubs and additional accommodations for wedding guests at all price points. My favorite stops were at the local antique stores, packed with great finds.

All-in-all I had a fabulous experience at Adare, and have many great ideas and inspirations from the trip. Explore it yourself on their web site, or give me a call for additional first-hand tips on hosting your own royal wedding.

Dinner with the Artists

One of the lucky things about working in an industry with insanely creative people is reaping the benefits of their creativity.

I got to do just that when I was invited to a dinner at the Foundry, an ethereal wedding and party venue in Long Island City. I've started to describe the evening to friends several times, but decided that the photos speak 1,000 words in this case.

The ladies from Poppies & Posies created the amazing florals and even cut out this fabric runner by hand!

Bryn from Paperfinger, who hand lettered the window signage at our pop-up store in Williamsburg a while back, lettered the menus, invitations and signage.

Something Different Party Rentals provided the large wooden farm table and many unique products for the event.

Thanks to Les Loups for the musical entertainment. The lovely meal and servers were hosted by Michael Stuart. I loved attending a dinner party he catered as I'm working with him soon for the first time at Angel Orensanz -- a harbinger of good things to come!

Paperfinger designed these rubber stamps for each guest as favors. I adore mine. It also gave me advance notice that I was seated next to my friend Maria McBride, an enormously talented creative from Bride's.

We're In The Bride's Guide, Martha Stewart Weddings Blog

I am so pleased that a new series of blogs from a shoot I styled in St. Lucia have started posting on The Bride's Guide. The inspiration on this volcanic island was everywhere. Photographer Mel Barlow and I worked for three days to create the rustic and unique looks you'll see on the blog; I think the results were beautiful.
The most amazing part was that I managed to stuff all the props needed into one giant suitcase. The trick to this destination shoot was finding compact items with big impact (parasols, cocktail napkins, paper pom poms, garland, linens), or to source items on-island. Ladera's General Manager scouted the property for me in advance, taking digital pictures of everything from the in-house china to the landscape. We managed to score incredible local pottery, exotic centerpieces from the gardens and found whimsy in the colorful mosaic floors and items from the gift shop. Stay tuned each week for the next 5 weeks for inspiration from the shoot!

Wedding Party 2011, Our Space

Images from the Wedding Party are beginning to roll in and I wanted to share a few with you. I'll start with our own area -- as all 117 vendors who participated know, it's a great outlet for creativity.

I was going for a soft, pink, Victorian, quirky feel, with accents of black to keep the look a tiny bit edgy. I enlisted lots of friends, who all independently understood what I was going for and delivered magical products that all worked together to create a little bit of a startling atmosphere, just as I intended.

You can see the gorgeous Juliska glassware, Match pewter-edged china and cutlery. LMD's Lewis Miller created the divine arrangements. An Amsale favorite crinkle chiffon dress in the background stands before my favorite piece, the full size Taylor Creative black horse!

Sylvia Weinstock made this beauty just for me. One of my favorite cakes ever, for sure.

I love to incorporate the ladies of Navy & Lavender's favor towers wherever I can. Doesn't this fit perfectly? What an innovative sweets display!

We had loads of Wedding Library stationery to incorporate. Love the pink and sepia.

The inspiration for the shoot came from these amazing laser cut flat bird cages. Some hang inside flat, fold-up stands, and some were hung as beautiful, delicate mobiles. Available at the Wedding Library.

Here's how it came together. Linens by Nuage Designs, with a pink silk dupioni underlay. The Victoria ghost chairs just melt away, but the velvet armchairs and modern Taylor Creative fireplace make the mix perfect.

A sweet cake by Cheryl Kleinman sits atop a favorite container turned cake stand.

And little feather butterflies trimmed in silver dust hide amongst the blooms. I like that there's a pretty but off-kilter surprise around every corner.

Laura Hooper Seating Charts

I've written about her before. Laura creates super sweet calligraphy which I like for maps, totes favors and signs. But I just discovered that she's creating custom seating charts that are just charming. Great for a destination wedding, the seating chart is practical, and creates a great "moment" for guests to enjoy. It's also a great keepsake -- you can keep the real chart and print out a smaller one from the digital version for your wedding scrapbook. Laura Hooper seating charts -- love it.

Lela Rose Party

Just now recovering from the rush of having the lovely Lela Rose and legions of her fans at our place last night. Between Lela, Stitch (her cutie pup), the food, the brides, the music, the margaritas, the flowers, the macarons and the dresses, we spent all day recovering and taking bridesmaid appointments. Here are a few pics of the night -- I don't think the rain kept even one guest away!

Jennifer and I had a lot of fun planning the Martha Stewart Bridal Market party with the MS Weddings team this year. Still recovering from last night where guests got to experience delights to the senses: great food, drink, eye candy, sweets, a photobooth, great music and our own mini lavender gifts. I am truly impressed.

We've never done a wedding at an all-inclusive resort, and didn't know what to expect. But when Darcy Miller of Martha Stewart Weddings invites you with your family -- how can you refuse? And when I told my boys about the resort the water slides were all they could talk about for a month!

It started out well when we were greeted at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa, with cookies, treats and beverages. It got better when we were shown to our ocean front suite, complete with bunk beds for the boys. The rooms are impeccable, beds comfy and amenities great. Perfect for a family wedding.

But by far the biggest and most pleasant surprise is the "all-inclusive". Breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, cotton candy and gratuities are all covered by the room rate -- no worrying about even signing a check to your room. From the simplest to the finest dining, even the great California wine we had was covered. What a relief and I think perfect for the family footing the bill!

What was not a surprise was the Martha Stewart wedding packages. So pretty, straight out of the magazine. We were treated to a sample of one of the settings and you'll see it is perfection. To have the degree of detail, care and taste applied to your wedding by the Martha Stewart Weddings team seems like a dream.

One of my favorite settings -- the tables look exactly like the photos!

Although it's a big resort, we never felt crowded or that it wasn't private enough.

Here's our actual table setting, pretty and so fitting for the beach.

I love this touch and the "stones" are actually chocolate!

I appreciate that orchids are hardy in the heat, and the exotic fruit looks great.

The overall effect is lovely -- the linens, table settings and colors are pure MSW.Granted, a Martha Stewart staff member set up the candy bar....

The ocean was crystal clear. We managed to go snorkeling and parasailing with the kids -- our fish count included manta rays, dolphins, turtles and plenty of fish!

We've been following the brand new e-magazine of our stationery Ceci Johnson and are delighted that this week's is all about the Mandell School and the party we planned for them. My partner Jennifer orchestrated the event with a team of our amazing vendors. Olivier Cheng produced the Hudson Valley region menu, Stone Kelly opted for potted plant centerpieces with the decoupage pots decorated by the school children, and Elan Artists provided the keepsake photography.

Here's a hint of what you'll see in Ceci's new weekly style letter.

The invitation doubled as a hand crafted work of art and an invitation. With our great team, Jennifer hand delivered each box to ensure the coveted gift would reach each recipient.The school children created the amazing wrapping on recycled paper. Needless to say, the party had a great turn-out!

Dog Days of Summer Party

Jennifer and I had the pleasure of hosting a end of summer cocktail party for wedding industry at the Roger Williams a couple of days ago. On a hot August afternoon I came up with the theme of "Dog Days". The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, is responsible for the hot weather due to its close proximity to the sun at this time. We used the theme for the invite and asked our friends at Levy Lighting project the constellation on the hotel's massive limestone walls.

Band Showcase

One of the most difficult pieces of advice to give is the choice of a band. I feel it's the most subjective part of planning a wedding. It's easy to say a drop-dead view is breathtaking or a stationer does impeccable work. But with bands, everyone seems to have a different opinion. Better videos are helping a lot, but there's nothing like a live showcase so that you can see (and hear) for yourself.
Tonight, I can give you my personal opinion that four great bands are performing: Hudson Project, Eric Nicolas, Rhythm Collective and The Elements. So see for yourself!

Chelsea Clinton, Marc Mezvinsky Wedding Is Unlike Anything Rhinebeck Has Ever Seen

It's turning out to be one of the hottest weddings of the season, and probably one of the most expensive.

When Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky tie the knot on July 31 they will be surrounded by friends, family and an A-list of celebrities that is likely to include more than one world leader. Hey, Dad's a former president and Mom's the current Secretary of State, after all.

Details of the wedding are slowly leaking out -- it's presumed to be in the small upstate New York village of Rhinebeck -- and it doesn't appear to disappoint. While nobody but the Clintons knows the exact price, it's shaping up to be a costly affair: the total price tag could easily reach $2 million.

When Jenna Bush got married two years ago at the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas, planners estimated it only cost $100,000 for the "down-home" celebration.

To get a better sense of exactly how much it will cost, ABC News reached out to one of the nation's top wedding planners, Claudia Hanlin, founder and partner in The Wedding Library. Hanlin, whose firm is the largest in New York, is the person the CEOs of major companies and the heads of hedge funds call when they get married.

She also happens to know Bryan Rafanelli, the head of Rafanelli Events and Clinton's wedding planner -- though friendships only go so far and Hanlin swears not to have any inside information about this top-secret event.

"My assumption is that what they want is going to be a lovely, traditional wedding," Hanlin said. That will actually keep the cost down, a bit. Don't expect exotic animals flown in or fireworks here as a grand finale.

Vendors may discount their services because of all the free publicity they will get from this event, but that is doubtful given the extra stress and work involved in this complicated wedding.

"Having to do everything in secrecy is a lot harder," Hanlin said. "Not telling your staff what time to show up but having them on call, that adds a lot of stress and difficulty to the event."

Chelsea Clinton, Marc Mezvinsky Wedding

So without further delay, here is a breakdown of what it costs to put on a wedding for a former president's only child.

Reception Space: $125,000 to $200,000 -- Clinton and Mezvinsky are reported to be getting married at the Astor Courts, a sprawling mansion designed by Stanford White in 1902 for John Jacob Astor IV. It's a private home owned by Clinton donors Kathleen Hammer and Arthur Seelbinder. It also happens to be on the market for $12 million.

Hanlin said the owners will need to do post-wedding cleaning and repairs, and had to take the house off the market for at least three days but probably a week or more. That doesn't come cheap. Then again, having the Clinton wedding at your home might add a bit to the value. And since the owners are already big donors, why not let the family use the house for free?

Catering: $750,000 -- The wedding is said to being catered by Blue Ribbon Restaurants, St. Regis and Olivier Cheng Catering and Events. One might be doing the cocktail hour, one the main meal and another late night snacks. Hanlin said each would charge around $500 per person, given that they will have to share a kitchen and coordinate with two other caters. Plus, there is the remote nature of the location. With 500 rumored guests at $1,500 each, that's one expensive meal.

Flowers: $250,000 -- Hanlin knows one of the vendors who worked on the engagement party for the Clintons.

"My sort of insider information from her is that they're not extravagant as a family," she said. "They're not wanting a lavish, over-the-top floral design."

That's good news for the accountants. Jeff Leatham, artistic director of the Four Seasons George V hotel in Paris, is said to be doing the arrangements. Hanlin said $175,000 to $500,000 could easily be spent on flowers for a wedding like this. Her guess: closer to $250,000 given the family's tastes.

Planning a Presidential Wedding

Music: $40,000 -- Jimmy Vali is said to be handling the music. Hanlin works with him frequently and said Vali would normally charge $28,000 for a wedding like this. But he might be pulling out all the stops for the Clintons.

"Maybe Bill will get up there and play the sax," she said.

That's going to require extra rehearsals. The size of the affair will also call for more elaborate staging.

Wedding Dress: $15,000 -- The dress could be anywhere from $5,000 up to $25,000. Hamlin pegs Clinton in the $15,000 range.

Photography: $35,000 -- The Clintons need to hire somebody who "will be ironclad and discrete," Hanlin said. Nobody wants embarrassing shots sold to the tabloids.

"They need to feel that everything is going to be private," she said.

Such photographers cost $25,000 plus $10,000 for a second person, which becomes necessary when you have more than 200 guests.

Video: $25,000 -- For a woman who has grown up in the national spotlight, it's probably a given that her wedding will also be captured on video. This is not a family that has shied away from the cameras.

Lighting: $75,000 to $100,000 -- The perimeter of the estate needs to be illuminated along with each of the estimated 50 tables inside for the guests.

Hair and Makeup: $20,000 -- The members of the bridal party need to look their best.

Invitations: $40,000 to $50,000 --"I would guess that they would go with a very nice, classic invitation," Hanlin said. That means $40,000 to $50,000 for the invitation, menu card, details about security, calligraphy, programs and postage.

Clinton Wedding Takes Over Rhinebeck

Party Planner: $175,000 -- Hanlin said she didn't know how much Rafanelli would charge for this event. Hanlin would charge $75,000 to $125,000 for a normal, upscale wedding. For something like the Clinton wedding, with its massive issues of privacy and security she said the price would be between $125,000 and $225,000, probably right at the $175,000 mark.

"When you have an A-list guest list of people from around the world who all have different needs, as the planner you need to know what they want," Hanlin said. "A guest list where every single guest is a VIP in their own right is a challenge."

Rehearsal Dinner: $250,000 -- Owner Josh Kroner, owner of the local Terrapin Restaurant is said to be catering the rehearsal dinner at the Grasmere farm estate on the edge of town. Hanlin said it could cost $1,000 a head for each of the 200 guests to cater the meal, and probably another $50,000 for simple flowers and decor.

Security: $30,000 -- This is a tricky one. The Secret Service will be providing its normal protection for the Clintons and yes, you the taxpayers will be covering that but there might be additional private security needed for the A-list guests. (President Obama, if he comes, will presumably also be bringing his own taxpayer-covered security detail.) Hanlin said private security for a typical celebrity wedding runs about $30,000.

Flower School Bridal Shower

I love a novel party idea. This one combines my love of flowers, learning, fun, and a great take-away gift at the end. Last night my friend Corey and I hosted a little Flower Power Bridal Shower for our great friend Dana. It was held at the Flower School New York. If you don't know it -- you should. They hold amazing courses for learning the art of flower arranging with master designers.

In our case, the fabulous Michael George was our teacher, helping us each create a beautiful bridal bouquet -- a "Biedermeier". I learned this new term, which is defined as a "very structured, symmetrical bouquet, complete with the naural stems".

Here we are with some of our creations.

Michael George is known for his very clean bouquets and arrangements, but a few stems must be broken to create a masterpiece!

As you may already know, the Wedding Library is responsible for all the bookings and wedding planning at the Museum of the City of New York. We've been working to share with brides what a great space this is for weddings, and one of the only spaces for a tented, outdoor wedding in NYC!

We are delighted that a beautiful wedding that we planned has a full page feature in the current Japanese Elle. The beautiful stationery that you see at the bottom of the page is from the Wedding Library. The photography is by Karen Wise. Although we can't read a word of what they say about the wedding, we're sure it's flattering!

Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa

I spent yesterday in the most wonderful way. 26 industry guests were hosted at Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa for a day of conversation, food, drink, music and spa treatments. Our hosts were Dan Reyburn, the General Manager of the Inn and Josh Friedman, the creative respresentative of many of our favorite photographers, videographers and musicians in New York.

Buttermilk Falls is an extraordinary destination wedding venue less than two hours from the city in Milton, New York. There are 13 guest rooms and several unique spots for tents or outdoor ceremonies and cocktails. As a bonus, the owner is also an owner of Great Jones Spa in NYC, my favorite spa around!

In a later post I will show one of the most interesting features about this venue -- the farm with peacocks, llamas, chickens, goats, ducks and geese. Beautiful!

The dinner table set by Matthew Robbin's team, delish. The catering was provided by Cobblestone Foods with ingredients from the Union Square Farmer's Market. So our meal started in the Hudson Valley, came to Union Square, via Brooklyn, then back to the Hudson Valley. I love New York!

Pretty lanterns set the mood once the sun set. And perfect weather.

From the river you can see some of the outbuildings. the Rooms are in eleven buildings all with different architectural styles.

There are several ponds on the property.This is the spa. The length of the building house a pool, steam room and sauna.As you stroll the property you come across perfect photo opportunities such as the barn.

And of course the Hudson River. Stay tuned for more on the music, luncheon and all the animals...
